A man accused of attacking a Manhattan Beach woman in her home pleaded not guilty Monday to an attempted murder charge.

Johnny Leroy Vigil, 40, of Manhattan Beach, was ordered to be held in lieu of $1 million bail while awaiting his next appearance Sept. 14 at the Torrance courthouse.

Police were called to the 200 block of El Porto Street about 3:35 a.m. last Wednesday following reports of a man seen running from the backyard of a residence after a woman was heard screaming, according to the Manhattan Beach Police Department.

Officers found the woman, whose name was withheld, seriously injured on her bedroom floor, police said. She was taken to a hospital, where she was treated for what police described as potentially life-threatening injuries.

Officers learned from witnesses and residential security video footage that the man had entered another residence, according to police, who said he threatened to kill himself if police came inside. Officers were able to convince him to surrender about an hour later.
