An adult-education teacher for the Coachella Valley Unified School District is due in court Wednesday on felony charges of sexually assaulting a child over a four-year period.
Luis Alfonso Martinez, 42, was arrested Aug. 12 in La Quinta and charged with two counts each of oral copulation or sexual penetration of a child under 10 and committing a lewd act on a child under 14 with force, and one count of committing three or more lewd acts with a child under 14, according to court records.
The alleged assaults occurred between October 2010 and October 2014, according to the felony complaint.
Lissette Santiago, a CVUSD spokeswoman, confirmed that Martinez was an adult-education teacher for the school district who’s accused of “lewd acts with a child, not involving his employment.”
Authorities have not revealed the defendant’s relationship, if any, to the alleged victim.
Martinez pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment on Aug. 20 at the Larson Justice Center in Indio, where he is due Wednesday morning for a felony settlement conference.
The defendant is being held at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning in lieu of $1 million bail.
