Authorities Thursday were investing the death of a man taken into custody by Garden Grove police last night.
Police were called just before 10 p.m. Wednesday to the 9500 block of Chapman Avenue about a man trying to break into a closed business, Garden Grove police Sgt. Evan Beresford said.
The suspect’s name was not immediately released as authorities were attempting to track down his family for notification, Beresford said.
He appeared to be “inflicting harm” on himself, so officers placed him in handcuffs for his own protection, Beresford said.
Orange County Fire Authority paramedics arrived on scene to provide him with aid and took him to a hospital, where he later died, he said.
The death is being treated as an in-custody incident, so the Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate, which is routine.
