A 42-year-old woman accused of stealing beer, a hot sauce bottle and a soda from a Riverside convenience store and then resisting arrest remained behind bars Sunday in lieu of $30,000.
The suspect, Blanca Mendez, was described by authorities as a transient who frequently commits thefts at a Circle K convenience store at Van Buren Boulevard and Wood Road.
On Friday afternoon, an officer responded to a report of a strong-arm robbery at that same store and spotted Mendez in the parking lot before she fled, according to the Riverside Police Department.
When the officer caught up with her, police said she “fought with the officer, even biting his hand, but she was safely taken into custody.”
Police say that prior to the officer arriving, Mendez stole a three-pack of beer, a hot sauce bottle, and a soda from the store’s fountain dispenser before trying to walk out without paying. When the clerk confronted her at the door, Mendez allegedly fought back and threw the soda at the clerk before fleeing.
Mendez was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of robbery, resisting arrest using violence and giving false information to a peace officer.
