A probationer who allegedly carjacked a Jurupa Valley motorist at knifepoint, robbed a convenience store and then barricaded himself in a residence, leading to an hours-long standoff, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to carjacking and other offenses.
Jesus Camacho, 33, was arrested and booked last Thursday into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside, where he’s being held in lieu of $60,000 bail.
Along with carjacking, Camacho is charged with vandalism, exhibiting a weapon at a peace officer and resisting arrest.
He was arraigned before Riverside County Superior Court Judge O.G. Magno, who scheduled a preliminary hearing for Oct. 13 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Bobby Albarran, about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Camacho allegedly confronted a motorist sitting in his Mercedes E320 in the parking lot of an AutoZone in the 3700 block of Riverview Drive.
Albarran alleged that the defendant pulled a long-bladed knife and put it “to the victim’s neck and ordered him out of the vehicle.”
The man complied, and Camacho allegedly sped away in the Mercedes, according to the sergeant.
He said that minutes later, the defendant stopped at an am/pm in the 2900 block of Rubidoux Boulevard, allegedly grabbed a 12-pack of beer and brandished his knife at the clerk to avoid paying for it.
At 2:30 p.m., patrol deputies were called to investigate a disturbance at a house in the 3600 block of Grandview Avenue, where they spotted the stolen Mercedes, Albarran said.
When deputies approached the residence, Camacho “armed himself with two large kitchen knives, and he refused to comply or surrender,” the sergeant said.
“The suspect barricaded himself within the residence,” Albarran said. “SWAT responded to assist with the apprehension.”
A search warrant was obtained and served by SWAT members two hours later, at which point Camacho was taken into custody without further incident.
No one was injured.
Court records show no documented prior felony convictions. However, he has misdemeanor convictions from 2017 and has an unresolved robbery case pending.
