A 41-year-old man is behind bars Tuesday, accused of DUI causing injury and murder for allegedly causing a multi-vehicle collision in downtown Palm Springs that left one person dead and six others in a hospital.

Andrew Watson Hibbard was arrested Monday following the multiple crashes around 5 p.m. at the intersection of North Palm Canyon Drive and Alejo Road, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

“An impaired person driving under the influence collided with three different cars and sent at least seven people to the hospital,” Police Chief Andy Mills told reporters at the scene.

Mills said one of the seven was pronounced dead at the hospital, and another person had “major injuries.”

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s Coroner’s Bureau on Tuesday identified the dead victim as Leon Reynoso, a 36-year-old man from Chula Vista.

Hibbard was booked into the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio, where he was being held on $2 million bail. He was expected to make his initial appearance at the Larson Justice Center on Thursday, according to jail records.
