A motorist in an allegedly stolen van who led officers on a brief chase in the South Los Angeles area was taken into custody following a standoff with police.

The chase led to the area of 59th Street and Budlong Avenue, where the driver stopped at about 11 a.m., beginning a standoff, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

No weapons were displayed by the man, who was taken into custody about 1:20 p.m., the LAPD reported. The suspect’s name was not immediately available.

As a precaution, nearby John Muir Magnet Middle School, Budlong Elementary School, and Parks Huerta Early Education Center were placed on lockdown during the standoff, according to Los Angeles school police.
