A man suspected of stealing an SUV was taken into custody in Long Beach Wednesday after leading police on a pursuit.

Los Angeles Police Department units began pursuing the white SUV at around 3:50 p.m. on East Anaheim Street in the LAPD’s Harbor Division area, CBS2 reported. The driver led police on a high-speed chase on surface streets, at times driving against head-on traffic and mounting sidewalks.

The SUV turned in to a parking lot in the area of East 23rd Street and Marber Avenue, near the North Los Altos Shopping Center, and nearly struck a group of pedestrians before coming to a stop.

The man exited the vehicle at 3:58 p.m. and appeared to grab something from inside before attempting to flee on foot, but LAPD officers quickly subdued him and took him into custody without further incident.
