A man was shot to death in the unincorporated Athens area bordering South Los Angeles and the shooters remained at large Sunday.

The shooting in the 1000 block of West Imperial Highway, near Vermont Avenue, was reported around 5:20 p.m., according to Deputy Armando Viera of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

The man, believed about 30 years old, suffered gunshot wounds to his upper body, Viera said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, his name withheld pending notification of next of kin.

A motive for the shooting was unknown.

Detectives learned two males fled the scene on foot, Viera said.
