A man allegedly armed with a machete was fatally shot by Los Angeles police in the Van Nuys area Wednesday.

Officers went to the 17400 block of Sherman Way about 7 a.m. on a report of a man armed with a machete in an alley, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Arriving officers “encountered the suspect, described as a male in his 20s armed with a machete,” police said in a statement.

“The suspect refused to comply with officers’ orders to drop the machete,” police said. “The suspect advanced toward an officer armed with the machete, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. (The) suspect was struck by gunfire and taken into custody.”

Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he died. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

“The suspect’s machete remains at scene and will be booked as evidence,” police said.

No officers or bystanders were injured. The shooting remains under investigation.
