A man shot a woman to death after she assaulted him with a knife in Thousand Palms, authorities said Wednesday.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department reported the death Tuesday, but only said that the shooting occurred during a dispute among two people.

Officials offered more details Wednesday, saying deputies from the Palm Desert station responded to the area of Westchester and San Miguelito drives at about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday regarding a reported assault.

An adult man shot an adult female after she assaulted him with a knife, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Ben Ramirez. It was unknown what sparked the argument and assault.

Ramirez said the woman fled the location and was later driven to a nearby fire station, where she succumbed to her gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead by fire personnel. It was not immediately clear who drove her to the station.

A person of interest in the shooting was detained at the scene, but Ramirez said the man was a licensed concealed carry weapon holder and no arrests were made as the investigation continued.

Identification of the involved parties was not released, pending further investigation and the notification of next of kin.

Anyone with information about the alleged assault and shooting was asked to call Investigator Letterly with the Central Homicide Unit at 951-955-2777.
