A 60-year-old motorcyclist was fatally injured when his bike collided with an SUV making a turn at a Menifee intersection, authorities said Monday.

James Whiten of Menifee died following the crash Saturday at Berea and Normandy roads, according to the Menifee Police Department.

Sgt. Matthew Bloch said Whiten was traveling westbound on his Yamaha about 4 p.m. when a 38-year-old Corona man at the wheel of a Jeep approached from the opposite direction.

When the Jeep driver initiated a turn, Whiten collided with the SUV, Bloch said.

The Jeep driver immediately stopped, according to the police spokesman.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the scene within a few minutes and found Whiten gravely injured. He was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, where he succumbed to his injuries less than an hour later.

Bloch said patrol officers questioned the Jeep driver, whose identity was not disclosed, and determined that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The man was not injured and was released at the scene.

The investigation was ongoing, and anyone with information was asked to contact the police department at 951-723-1565.
