A 27-year-old man suspected of stealing about $13,000 worth of items from a convenience store in Desert Hot Springs pleaded not guilty Thursday.
Jacques Carnel Coleman was charged with two felony counts, one each of burglary and grand theft of over $950, according to court records. He pleaded not guilty to both counts Thursday afternoon at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
Officers responded on Sept. 18 around 9 a.m. to a report of a retail burglary at the 7-Eleven store at 66500 Eighth Street, according to Detective Sgt. Christopher Saucier from the Desert Hot Springs Police Department.
A male entered the back room of the 7-Eleven and stole approximately $13,000 worth of products and merchandise while the store clerk was distracted, Saucier said.
Detectives conducted an investigation, in which they identified Coleman and a vehicle suspected of being used in the burglary, Saucier said.
Coleman was found Tuesday and arrested in Hawthorne by Hawthorne Police Department officers, according to Saucier. Palm Springs detectives then traveled to Hawthorne, where they found evidence related to the burglary, Saucier said.
Coleman was booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio, where he was being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.
