A 26-year-old felon was behind bars Wednesday on suspicion of carjacking a vehicle near Fashion Island and leading police on a chase before barricading himself in a house and ultimately surrendering.

Alfredo M. Hopgood of Costa Mesa was booked on suspicion of robbery, carjacking, felon in possession of a firearm, ammunition and a large capacity magazine as well as assault with a deadly weapon, recklessly evading police, violating parole and carrying a gun in a public place, according to Newport Beach police. He was being held without bail, according to jail records.

Police were dispatched at 3:33 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a carjacking near Fashion Island, police said. Hopgood is accused of taking one vehicle, and when it broke down, he carjacked another vehicle at gunpoint, police alleged.

Police picked up the pursuit of the stolen black Jeep Cherokee for several miles until the suspect pulled over on Santiago Drive in the Dover Shores neighborhood, jumped out and ran away and hid in a residence, where he barricaded himself, police said.

Officers eventually caught up to the suspect at 8:50 p.m. in a backyard within a perimeter police had established, and he surrendered without incident, police said.
