One Year Ago Today (November 17, 2021)…A former teacher and children’s book author was behind bars for allegedly sexually assaulting a child at Taft Elementary School in Riverside.

Paul Edward Lowe of Corona, 61, was arrested Nov. 9 following an investigation stemming from a report made by a 32-year-old man who said his fourth-grade teacher sexually abused him 20 years ago, according to the Riverside Police Department.

Authorities said the alleged assaults mainly occurred away from campus.

The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office has charged Lowe with eight felony counts of aggravated sexual assault on a child, three felony counts of aggravated sexual assault on a minor with force and three felony counts of aggravated sexual assault on a child under 14 years of age.

He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance at the Riverside Hall of Justice on Dec. 3 to be arraigned on the charges and is currently being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center on $5 million bail.

Lowe taught at Taft Elementary from 1997 to 2002, when he resigned. According to authorities, his resignation stemmed from an arrest and conviction for sexual assault of a minor that occurred in Los Angeles County.

In addition to being a teacher, Lowe worked for the YMCA and as an AYSO youth soccer coach in Los Angeles County and as a youth soccer coach in Big Bear. He also worked as a private school teacher in Hacienda Heights in the early 1990s. He wrote children books under the name of “Edric Phoenix,” according to officials.
