A suspect in an allegedly stolen vehicle led authorities on a pursuit through the South Gate and East Los Angeles areas Tuesday evening before abandoning the vehicle and scrambling into a residential neighborhood, prompting an extensive search.

The pursuit started at around 5:10 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

At one point during the chase, the driver came to a stop on the southbound Long Beach (710) Freeway near the Pomona (60) Freeway, and three passengers got out of the vehicle and ran off the freeway.

The driver continued driving on the rush-hour-congested freeway, eventually exiting and driving on surface streets before jumping out of the vehicle near Liberty Boulevard and Elizabeth Avenue in South Gate and fleeing on foot.

Authorities descended on the scene and were continuing the search Tuesday evening.
