A 41-year-old man pleaded guilty Wednesday and was immediately sentenced to a year in jail for beating up the mother of his 3-year-old daughter in front of the toddler and two other children of the victim in Placentia while he was free on bail.
Steve Martin Bustamante dropped off his girlfriend’s 9-year-old and 5-year-old children about noon on May 4 to an apartment at 1649 Orchard Drive, between Van Buren Street and Richfield Road, according to court records.
Bustamante returned about 3:15 p.m. demanding to see the 3-year-old daughter they had together, police said.
The mother heard her daughter crying and saw her on the floor with the Bustamante’s hands on her back, police said. Bustamante knocked her down and punched her in the face, prompting the woman to get a knife. When she tried to stab him in the arm he shoved her down again and she injured herself on the knife while he stomped on her face, police said in the preliminary hearing.
Bustamante pleaded guilty to a felony count of corporal injury on a spouse-cohabitant and admitted a sentencing enhancement for committing an offense while out on bail, according to court records.
As part of the plea deal, three counts of child abuse and single counts each of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, forgery of public or corporate seals, all felonies. Also dismissed were misdemeanor counts of contempt of court for disobeying a court order and disobeying a domestic relations court order.
Bustamante, who has been in jail since May 4, was sentenced to 364 days in jail and placed on three years of formal probation. He was also ordered to participate in a batterers’ treatment program.
