A vehicle erupted in flames Thursday on the Riverside (91) Freeway and was consumed before firefighters could knock down the blaze, which prompted a partial closure of the freeway.

The non-injury fire was reported at 1:25 p.m. on the eastbound 91 just east of La Sierra Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said that the blaze started after an airbag deployment, but no other details were immediately available.

The motorist, whose identity was not disclosed, stalled in the HOV lane.

Riverside Fire Department engine crews reached the location minutes later and went to work extinguishing the blaze. Because of the firefighting operation, CHP officers shut down three traffic lanes, leading to a SigAlert due to the ensuing traffic jam.

As of 2 p.m., the alert remained in effect.

The fire was knocked down shortly before 2 p.m.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
