UCLA Health hospitals, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Keck Hospital of USC, Hoag Memorial Presbyterian in Newport Beach and Huntington Memorial Hospital were ranked as the Los Angeles region’s five best hospitals, according to a report released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.
Rounding out the top 10 were UC Irvine Medical Center, Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, Memorial Care Long Beach Medical Center, St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton and Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, according to U.S. News.
The top pick, UCLA, was selected No. 1 in Los Angeles, No. 2 in California and No. 7 nationally in the annual evaluation.
U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 16 specialties and nine procedures and conditions. To be included on the honor roll, hospitals must perform well in many of these areas of care. Only 158 hospitals were nationally ranked in even one specialty. UCLA Health received top rankings in 11 specialties, Cedars in 12 and Keck in nine.
UCLA Health includes four hospitals on two campuses — Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center; UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica; UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital; and Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA — and more than 170 clinics throughout Southern California. It also includes the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles ranked eighth in the nation on the magazine’s hospital honor roll, and it had 12 medical specialties ranked nationally. Two of those 12 specialties — cardiology and heart surgery, and gastroenterology and GI surgery — were ranked No. 3 in the U.S.
The rankings are based on a variety of measures, including patient outcomes, patient safety, technology and reputation.
Keck Medical Center of USC, which includes Keck Hospital of USC and USC Norris Cancer Hospital, maintained its third-place ranking on the list of Best Hospitals in metro Los Angeles and increased its ranking among the Best Hospitals in California (No. 8), moving up one spot from last year. The medical center was purchased by the university in 2009.
