The coroner Monday released the name of a 23-year-old Compton woman killed in a crash involving street racing in the unincorporated Athens Village community of Los Angeles.
Bethany Holguin was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner’s office said.
The two-vehicle crash was at 11:24 p.m. Saturday at 131st Street and Towne Avenue, California Highway Patrol Officer C. McCutcheon said.
A 2005 Infiniti was westbound on 131st Street approaching a stop sign, McCutcheon said. “The Infiniti was traveling at a high rate of speed while actively engaged in a street race with an unknown red sedan,” the officer said.
A 2005 Toyota Camry driven by the Compton woman was heading south on Towne Avenue when the driver of the Infiniti failed to stop and broadsided the Camry, McCutcheon said.
“Both involved vehicles continued in a westerly direction and the Toyota Camry collided with a parked Harley-Davidson motorcycle and parked Ford Mustang before coming to rest,” the officer said.
The 30-year-old Compton man who was Holguin’s passenger was taken to Harbor UCLA with major injuries, McCutcheon said.
“The driver and passenger from the Infiniti entered the red sedan and fled the scene,” the officer said. The Infiniti driver was described as a black man in his late 30s.
Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call McCutcheon at 310-516-3355.
