The NCAA Thursday canceled March Madness, saying its men’s and women’s annual basketball championship tournaments will be scrubbed due to coronavirus.

“This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities,” according to an NCAA statement.

The NCAA had previously announced that the tournament games would be held without spectators.

The men’s tournament West Regional was scheduled to be held March 26-28 at Staples Center.

First- and second-round games in the women’s tournament were expected to be played at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. Sites for the first two rounds of the women’s tournament are played at the sites of the top 16 seeds.
