Funeral services were pending Monday for Vernon City Councilman Michael Ybarra, a Vernon native who was elected to the council two years ago, following in the footsteps of his father.

Ybarra, 61, died Friday in Sacramento, according to the city.

“Our city mourns the loss of council member Michael Ybarra, a dedicated public servant with deep roots in this community,” City Administrator Mark Whitworth said. “Council member Ybarra worked diligently to keep Vernon on its good governance path. He was a strong supporter of Vernon’s businesses and kept a close eye on city fiscal issues.”

Ybarra was elected during a time when the city was rocked by allegations of corruption. His successful campaign against incumbent Daniel Newmire was the first contested election in the city in years.

Ybarra’s family has resided in Vernon since the 1860s. His father, Thomas Ybarra, served on the council for 43 years. His great-uncle, Esteban Peralta, served on the council for 15 years in the 1930s and 40s, according to the city.

He is survived by his wife, Susana Rodriguez-Ybarra, and three daughters.
