Comedian/actress Melissa McCarthy will receive a Comedic Genius Award at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, the network announced Wednesday.
McCarthy will be honored “for her bold and fearless comedic style that has captured audiences’ hearts,” according to the network.
McCarthy is a two-time MTV Movie Awards winner, receiving best comedic performance and best WTF moment honors for her work in the film “Bridesmaids.”
“Honoring Melissa McCarthy with MTV’s Comedic Genius Award is exciting on so many levels. It’s the first time this award is going to a woman, which is fantastic,” said Casey Patterson, an executive producer of the show. “We love Melissa for her performances but she also writes, produces and directs comedy, so this award is incredibly well deserved. The most exciting thing about Melissa is how brave she is, you don’t want to miss her moment in the show.”
In addition to “Bridesmaids,” McCarthy starred in the CBS comedy “Mike & Molly.” Her other film credits include “St. Vincent,” “Spy,” “Identity Thief” and “The Heat.” Her latest film, “Boss,” opens this week, and she will appear in the re-boot “Ghostbusters” this summer.
The MTV Movie Awards will be taped Saturday at the Warner Bros. backlot in Burbank. The show will air Sunday.
