
A group of sewer-dwelling, crime-fighting turtles out-dueled mutants to claim the top spot at the weekend North American box office, according to final figures released Monday.
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” debuted in first place by earning $35.3 million at theaters between Friday and Sunday, according to box office tracker comScore.

The film bested another sequel, “X-Men: Apocalypse,” which took second place with $22.8 million. “Me Before You” debuted in third place with $18.7 million.
Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass” settled in to fourth place with $11.3 million, followed by the animated “The Angry Birds Movie,” which earned $10.2 million.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies of the weekend were “Captain America: Civil War” ($7.8 million); “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” ($4.8 million); “Popstar: Never Stop Stopping” ($4.7 million); “The Jungle Book” ($4.4 million); and “The Nice Guys” ($3.5 million).
