Depending on your source, Alix Klineman is either 6 feet 4 or 6 feet 5. No matter. The Manhattan Beach native has tall orders for 2020: winning Olympic gold.
She’s been chosen by two-time Olympic medalist April Ross to be her partner in beach volleyball at the Tokyo Games.
Ross, out of Newport Beach, won silver at the 2012 London Games with Jennifer Kessy — after losing in the final to famed Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jennings.
Why did Ross choose Klineman — a former indoor volleyball standout at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach and later Stanford?
“I watched her a little bit, just after one season on the beach, [and] I thought she was picking up some really good things, was a lot quicker than I expected her to be,” Ross told NBC Sports.
Ross said Klineman, with that “chip on her shoulder,” reminded her of herself.
“I tried training with the national team a bunch and just felt overlooked, like all the time. … She’s out here on the beach because she wants to go to the Olympics, and she has something to prove.”
