Actors Ethan Hawke and Glenn Close and the film “If Beale Street Could Talk” took top honors during the 34th annual Film Independent Spirit awards honoring the best in independent film productions.
Hawke won Best Male Lead for “First Reformed” and Oscar favorite Glenn Close took Best Female Lead for “The Wife.”
“Beale Street,” an adaptation of a novel by writer James Baldwin, won three awards: Best Feature film, Best Director for Barry Jenkins and Best Supporting Female Actor for Regina King.
The ceremony, hosted by actress-comedian Aubrey Plaza, was held Saturday in a tent next to the Santa Monica Pier.
The winner of the Spirit Award for Best Feature Film has gone on to the win the Best-Picture Oscar in four of the past five years, however, none of this year’s Spirit Award feature nominees was nominated for the Academy Award.
