Environmental advocate Suzy Amis Cameron and her husband, filmmaker James Cameron, announced the launch of a virtual school Wednesday that will focus on eco-literacy and provide parents with an innovative option as schools across Southern California remain closed amid the coronavirus pandemic.
MUSE Virtual is inspired by the K-12 MUSE School in Calabasas that was founded in 2006 by Suzy and her sister, Rebecca Amis. That school, located at 1666 Las Virgenes Canyon Road, has been described as the first vegan K-12 school in the country.
MUSE Virtual will offer a new, holistic online learning platform for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
“Our highest priority in creating MUSE Virtual is to ensure the health and safety of our students, administrators, faculty and teachers during COVID-19 and beyond by staying safe at home — all while students experience a fulfilling, unique, online education,” Suzy Amis Cameron said.
The founders said the school will include a one-on-one connection with teachers, and will offer virtual course work in theater, music, art, movement, seed-to-table cooking and more.
The curriculum will adhere to five pillars: Passion-Based Learning, Academics, Sustainability, Communication, and Self-Efficacy.
“The relationship between teacher and student is imperative to a child’s academic success — and is more crucial now, than ever, as young people everywhere are grappling with an increasingly uncertain future,” said Suzanne McClure, director of MUSE Virtual.
MUSE Virtual is accepting enrollment applications for the fall 2020 semester, offering “tiered learning packages that suit the differing needs of families and their children.”
Tuition rates are $5,500 per semester for elementary students, $6,500 for middle school students, and $7,500 for high school students, with a $500 discount on yearly tuition for those who apply by July 31, according to Julie Parnell, MUSE marketing manager.
The school does offer financial aid, she said.
