A motorist was taken into custody Thursday after driving a stolen BMW sedan from the downtown Los Angeles area to Whittier, where he surrendered.
Officers began chasing the car, its rear bumper dragging on the ground, shortly before noon in the Los Angeles Police Department’s Rampart area, but the chase was ordered terminated by a police watch commander after about 10 minutes, according to the LAPD.
However, the motorist kept speeding along on surface streets and went onto the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway, monitored by a police helicopter crew. The car’s progress was broadcast live on at least two television stations.
About 12:50 p.m., the driver nearly collided with a patrol car near Washington Avenue and Philadelphia Street in Whittier. A short time later, the man got out of the car and ran a short distance before surrendering.
His name was not immediately available.
