The Netflix zombie heist movie “Army of the Dead” Thursday topped the weekly list of the most-watched programs on the four streaming services whose viewership figures are announced by Nielsen.
Viewers spent 913 million minutes watching the film directed by “Justice League” director Zack Snyder in its first three days of release on Netflix, which started streaming the film on May 21 — one week after its opening in select theaters.
“Army of the Dead” was among two programs in the Top 10 for the week of May 17-23 not in the previous week. The other was “Who Killed Sara?” eighth for the week with 500 million minutes watched of its 18 episodes.
The return of Netflix’s Mexican mystery thriller to the Top 10 after a six-week absence was propelled by the May 19 release of its eight-episode second season.
Dropping out of the Top 10 were Netflix’s computer-animated science fiction comedy film “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” and the Netflix comedy “The Upshaws.”
The long-running CBS action drama “NCIS” was second for the week with 690 million minutes watched of its 353 episodes, 2.7% more than the 672 million minutes watched the previous week when it finished fourth.
Last week’s leader, “Jupiter’s Legacy,” dropped to 10th with 405 million minutes watched of its eight episodes, 60.3% less than the 1.019 billion the week of May 10-16, the first full week of release of the canceled Netflix superhero series.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” was the lone non-Netflix program in the Top 10, finishing seventh with 516 million minutes watched of its 42 episodes, including the sixth episode of its of its fourth season, which was released May 19. The Hulu dystopian drama was fifth the previous week, with 584 million minutes watched of 41 episodes.
Nielsen also announces streaming viewership of Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ programming.
The top 10 consisted of three original streaming series, three series that originally aired on U.S. broadcast or cable networks, two movies, the drama series “StartUp” which premiered in 2016 on the then-Sony Pictures-owned streaming platform Crackle, and “CoComelon,” which originated as 3D animation videos of both traditional nursery rhymes and original children’s songs on YouTube.
The Top 10 programs were “Army of the Dead”; “NCIS”; “StartUp”; “Criminal Minds”; “Grey’s Anatomy”; “CoCoMelon”; “The Handmaid’s Tale”; “Who Killed Sara?”; “The Woman in the Window”; and “Jupiter’s Legacy.”
The figures only reflect television set-related viewing, including such television-connected devices as Roku and Apple TV. Mobile-only viewing is not included in Nielsen’s streaming measurement systems.
