More than $77,000 was raised last week by Variety — the Children’s Charity of the Desert during its two-day Radiothon seeking donations to purchase bicycles and helmets for Coachella Valley fourth-graders, the nonprofit announced Friday.
Radiothon was broadcast live on KPLM-106 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 1 and Nov. 2.
The money raised will go toward the purchase of 400 bicycles, which will be distributed to students on Dec. 11 at Palm Springs Motors. In addition, 400 helmets purchased by Walter Clark Legal Group will also be given away.
Students eligible to receive bikes were nominated by local schools based on the student’s needs, efforts, sportsmanship, and respect for self, family, teachers and community, according to organizers.
“It is just the start of the holiday season and we are truly grateful for the community’s support and those of our sponsors that help make this event a success,” said Michael Matthews, board president of Variety. “For most, if not all kids, this is the first bicycle they will receive and we look forward to seeing the joy on their faces.”
More than 5,000 bikes have been provided for Coachella Valley children since the program’s inception, according to Variety.
