Sexual teasing, sex jokes, lurid question and jokes are all being directed at 40 percent of women workers in fast-food restaurants in Los Angeles and across the nation.

That’s the conclusion of a survey of more than 1,200 fast food workers in non-managerial positions, according to an employment discrimination legal expert in Santa Monica.

And almost half of those women suffered from “extreme stress” and depression related to the abuse.

The survey and attorney’s report did not single out any specific fast-food restaurant, but said the survey covered most of the well-known brands in the industry.

Cortney Shegerian of the employment discrimination law firm Shegerian & Associates cited a recent survey by Hart Research.

“The survey results showed that the most common types of harassment these women experienced were sexual teasing, questions, jokes, and remarks,” Shegerian said. “Hopefully, this helps women understand that sexual harassment can take many different forms so they know how to identify and when to report inappropriate behavior.

“But unfortunately, that’s not all these women had to endure,” according to Shegerian. “Nearly half of the victims who were surveyed admitted to suffering from extreme stress, anxiety or depression as a result of the harassment.”

Shegerian said it is clear from this report that there is “still a great deal of work to be done to protect workers from sexual harassment.”

“It doesn’t matter where you work or what you do for a living—you are entitled to a workplace free from discrimination and sexual harassment.”
