Wild sex a thing of the past?
If you think you’re having sex less often than you used to, you may be right.
A new academic study concludes that American adults in the Los Angeles area and across the nation are having sex about nine times fewer per year recently than they had in the late 1990s.
And if you think today’s crop of young people are the ones having all the fun these days, forget it.
“With age and time period controlled, those born in the 1930s (Silent generation) had sex the most often, whereas those born in the 1990s (Millennials and iGen) had sex the least often,” according to the study reported in the Archives of Sexual Behavior this month.
The study relied on “nationally representative” data from the General Social Survey that delved into the sex lives of 26,620 adults from 1989 to 2014.
Why are Americans having less fun in bed?
The authors of the study posited that more people have no sex partners, whether married or in relationships. The number of people with partners stayed about the same through the years of the study.
With fewer Americans having no partners, and as single people without partners have sex less often that people with partners, the overall frequency of sex romps has been reduced.
“Declines in sexual frequency were similar across gender, race, region, educational level and work status and were largest among those in their 50s, those with school-age children and those who did not watch pornography,” according to “Declines in Sexual Frequency among American Adults, 1989-2014.”
Does watching pornography have an effect on people’s desire for sex in real life? Are people working such long hours they’re just too tired to jump into bed for anything other than sleep?
“The decline in sex encounters was not linked to longer working hours or increased pornography use,” according to the authors in the abstract of the study. “Age had a strong effect on sexual frequency: Americans in their 20s had sex an average of about 80 times per year, compared to about 20 times per year for those in their 60s.
“The results suggest that Americans are having sex less frequently due to two primary factors: An increasing number of individuals without a steady or marital partner and a decline in sexual frequency among those with partners.”
