Ramps connecting Interstate 15 to the westbound Riverside (91) Freeway in Corona will be taken out of service this weekend for resurfacing, and motorists were advised to expect delays and consider alternate routes.

According to the Riverside County Transportation Commission, both the north- and southbound I-15 connectors to the westbound 91 will be shut down at 9 p.m. Friday, not reopening until about 4 a.m. Monday.

Detours will be in effect, directing motorists on I-15 to McKinley Street, where they can re-enter the westbound 91 via surface streets, RCTC officials said.

“Motorists should plan ahead, expect heavy delays on the 91, I-15 and McKinley Street interchange,” said RCTC spokeswoman Cheryl Donahue.

An alternate route to reaching the westbound 91 from northbound I-15 is to exit onto Sixth Street and go west to Main Street, re-entering the freeway in downtown Corona. An alternate route on the southbound I-15 would require exiting onto Hidden Valley Parkway, going west to Hamner Avenue, which turns into Main Street and intersects the 91 downtown, officials said.

According to the RCTC, the closures are necessary for crews to tear out temporary asphalt that was installed during the 91 Project and replace it with permanent blacktop to make for a “smoother ride.”

The work will also necessitate closing the Main Street entrance and exit ramps to and from the westbound 91, as well as the northbound Magnolia Avenue on-ramp to I-15.

The $1.4 billion 91 Project officially wrapped up last April and entailed adding one general purpose lane on each side of the 91 between the Orange County line and I-15, as well as two additional express toll lanes on both sides of the freeway in the same area.

Connector bridges and shoulders were also widened throughout the construction zone.
