A motorist was killed and another driver suffered moderate injuries in a two-vehicle, head-on traffic crash Sunday in the Athens Village community of unincorporated Los Angeles County.
The crash occurred around 5:40 a.m. in the area of South Main Street and East El Segundo Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Just prior to the crash, Jose Estores Jr. was driving a 2007 Toyota Tacoma westbound on El Segundo Boulevard, approaching Main Street, at undetermined speed in the number one lane, as Luis Vasquez, 50, was stopped in the left turn lane at Main Street in a 2002 GMC.
For an undetermined reason, the CHP said, Estores allowed his pickup truck to move left as he crossed Main Street and the front of his vehicle then struck the front of the GMC.
Vasquez was pronounced dead at the scene and Estores, 60, a resident of Lakewood, was rushed to an area hospital with a hairline fracture to a leg. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The CHP had no place of residence for Vasquez.
A representative from the Los Angeles County coroner’s office was called to the location at 6:19 a.m.
