A house fire in the Central-Alameda area of Los Angeles Monday left a 40-year-old man dead and an 18-year-old man critically burned, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 4:26 a.m. in the 1400 block of East 55th Street, according to Los Angeles Fire Department.

Upon arrival, firefighters were told two people were trapped inside the single-story house with a two-room rear addition, according to an LAFD official, who said it took 24 minutes put out the flames.

“Sadly, the 40 year-old-male whom firefighters pulled out of the burning home succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital,” LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said. “A second patient, (an) 18-year-old male, was transported with critical but non-life-threatening burn injuries.”

The relationship of the men to one another, if any, was not immediately known.

Two other occupants of the home were not injured.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
