Authorities Sunday were still trying to figure out why a 37-year-old man was killed before dawn when his vehicle rolled over on the eastbound Interstate 10 freeway near Palm Springs and crashed about 30 feet down an embankment.
The deadly crash occurred about 4 a.m. near Highway 62 in the unincorporated Whitewater area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The vehicle landed on its roof about 30 feet down the embankment on the right side of the freeway, the CHP said.
Firefighters found the vehicle and pronounced the driver inside dead at the scene, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The person was later identified as Joshua Kunkle of La Quinta, the coroner’s office said.
Details the crash, along with other questions about possible impairment, seat belt use or sleeping, were not available.
