A man who allegedly pointed a handgun at deputies serving a warrant Wednesday in the South Whittier area was wounded Wednesday when at least one deputy opened fire, authorities said.
The shooting was reported about 4:40 a.m. in the 12400 block of Shoemaker Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The wounded man was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. No deputies were injured.
According to Fox11, the 23-year-old man was wanted for assault with a deadly weapon, and Special Enforcement Bureau deputies were serving a search warrant when the shooting occurred.
“During the execution of the search warrant, after the SWAT deputies advised their presence, the individuals inside did not open the door,” sheriff’s Lt. Charles Calderaro said. “Forced entry was made. When the deputies made entry into the residence, an individual produced a handgun, pointed it at the deputies, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.”
Anyone with information about the case was urged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
