A 52-year-old man died Saturday when his speeding Tesla left the roadway in Encino and crashed into a tree.

The driver was identified as Richard Mortiz of Van Nuys, according to the coroner’s office.

The gray Tesla was moving at an “unsafe speed” westbound on Victory Boulevard east of White Oak Avenue, where it left the roadway and struck the tree about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a police officer at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.

Mortiz was the only occupant in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
