SWAT officers came up empty Wednesday in a search for a crowbar-wielding burglar at a Kohl’s department store in Laguna Niguel.

Employees arriving for work at 5:30 a.m. at 27380 Heather Ridge saw the suspect on a surveillance camera and called authorities, according to Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Hallock.

The suspect smashed a jewelry display case, but it’s unclear whether he took anything, Hallock said.

“There may be a small amount of jewelry missing,” the lieutenant said.

SWAT officers began combing through the store about 7 a.m. and finished the search about 10:30 a.m. without finding the suspect, Hallock said. The search delayed the store’s normal opening time by several hours. he said.
