A 51-year-old Fullerton man was charged Thursday with sexually assaulting a girl, starting when she was about 6 years old, multiple times for several years.
Rupert Edward Mares was a longtime friend of the girl’s family, according to Deputy District Attorney Rebecca Reed.
“She was over there all the time,” Reed said of the victim.
The allegations came to light recently when the girl was over at his home and he allegedly tried to assault her again, so she called her family to be picked up, Reed said. When she got home she told her parents about the alleged abuse, Reed said.
The alleged assaults, which date back to August 2006 and continue through August 2013, happened in Whittier and elsewhere in Los Angeles County as well as when the defendant moved to Fullerton, Reed said.
Orange County prosecutors will also handle the Los Angeles County allegations, according to Reed.
Mares, whose planned arraignment today was rescheduled until Sept. 16, was charged with 14 felony counts that include lewd acts, oral copulation or sexual penetration on a child, sexual intercourse with a child 10 or younger and continuous sexual abuse of a child.
