Felony charges were filed Tuesday against a 32-year-old convicted drunken driver accused in a DUI crash that injured two young girls in his vehicle last weekend in San Juan Capistrano.

Victor Hugo Chavez Villegas was exiting the northbound San Diego (5) Freeway at Ortega Highway about 3:35 p.m. Sunday when he lost control of his Toyota 4runner, which slammed into a center divider wall, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Shuman.

Two passengers, ages 8 and 9, sustained minor injuries and were treated and released from a nearby hospital, Shuman said. It was not clear whether the driver was related to the girls.

Villegas was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit of .08 percent and two counts of child abuse and endangerment, all felonies, according to court records.

According to the criminal complaint, Villegas was convicted of drunken driving on Feb. 24, 2014, in San Diego Superior Court.
