An old motel will be converted into housing for Santa Ana’s homeless, it was announced Wednesday.
The shuttered motel at 2151 E. First St. will be converted into 72 apartments with a community guard, laundry room, 1,200-square-foot commercial kitchen and dining room.
City officials will provide nearly $1 million annually in vouchers for residents of The Orchard that will help offset the cost of rent.
“The Orchard is the first permanent supportive housing project for chronically homeless individuals in Santa Ana, and one of the largest projects to provide housing for homeless individuals in Orange County,” Councilman Vicente Sarmiento said.
