A 36-year-old assault suspect who allegedly targeted an elderly adult was behind bars Wednesday following a standoff with Newport Beach Police that lasted almost six hours, police said.
Scott Patrick Cole, who was being held on $50,000 bail, was booked on suspicion of battery with serious bodily injury, trespassing, causing harm to an elder-dependent adult and assault with a deadly weapon, according to Jennifer Manzella of the Newport Beach Police Department.
There were few details available about the “elderly” victim, including the relationship between the pair, the victim’s age, what happened or why.
Police were summoned to the 800 block of 15th Street at 4:34 p.m. Tuesday regarding an assault there, Manzella said.
The victim, who fled to a neighbor’s home, was treated by paramedics and taken to an area hospital, Manzella said.
When officers attempted to question Cole about the assault he refused to open the door and “appeared extremely agitated and began breaking windows and objects inside the home,” Manzella said.
SWAT officers were called to the barricade situation and spent hours attempting to get Cole to surrender, Manzella said, adding “his behavior continued to be erratic and destructive.”
The officers finally got warrants to enter the home and took him into custody without incident at 10:14 p.m., Manzella said.
