Officials Wednesday were trying to figure what caused the basement of a home in Anaheim to erupt in flames, killing three small dogs.

The trapped canines were the only casualties of the fire, and no people were injured.

The blaze raged for 40 minutes before 30 firefighters were finally able to douse the flames.

The fire Tuesday was reported in the single-family home in the 200 block of North Grand Avenue, according to Daron Wyatt, public information officer for the Anaheim Fire Department.

Other parts of the residence suffered damage from smoke and radiant heat, but the fire itself was confined to the basement, where the dogs were apparently trapped.

There was no word of the types of dogs that were killed, nor if the owners were home at the time of the fire.
