A woman was fighting for her life and her infant granddaughter was also hurt Tuesday when a driver lost control of her car and struck them in Anaheim.

The driver was backing out of an apartment complex in the 900 block of Nutwood Street just before 2 p.m. when she apparently lost control of an older- model Toyota Camry that crashed through a wrought-iron security gate, striking the woman and her granddaughter, who is about a year old, according to Anaheim police Sgt. Daron Wyatt.

The grandmother, who is believed to be in her 30s, was walking northbound on the east sidewalk, pushing her grandchild in a stroller, when the Camry reversed at a high rate of speed in the alley behind the apartment complex, Wyatt said.

Firefighters freed the woman, who was pinned under the vehicle, and she was rushed to an area hospital in “extremely critical condition,” he said. The toddler was also sent to an area hospital to be checked out, but her injuries were described as minor, Wyatt said.

Police did not immediately release the names of the victims or the driver.
