The Orange County Breakers won in men’s doubles and singles, but their female players lost all three of their sets in a 22-19 loss to the San Diego Aviators Tuesday evening at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad.
The Breakers (4-4) got a 5-4 victory from their men’s doubles team of Teymuraz Gabashvili and Ken Skupski over Rajeev Ram and Raven Klaasen in the opening set of the World TeamTennis match.
Gabashvili defeated Ram, 5-3, in men’s singles, the third set. Vandeweghe’s 5-4 victory over Yanina Wickmayer, in the fourth set, women’s singles, tied the match, 17-17.
Vandeweghe and Klaasen then defeated Skupski and Andreja Klepac, 5-2, in the final set, mixed doubles, to complete San Diego’s (5-3) second victory over the Breakers in two nights.
Vandeweghe and Shelby Rogers defeated Klepac and Wickmayer, 5-3, in the match’s second set, women’s doubles.
Vandeweghe was playing for the Aviators for likely the only time this season. She reached the women’s singles quarterfinals of Wimbledon this month and the semifinals of the Australian Open in January and is 23rd in the Women’s Tennis Association singles rankings.
