Authorities Friday reported the in-custody death of a defendant, who was being held in the Santa Ana jail for federal authorities when he was found “unresponsive” in his cell a week ago.
The defendant’s name was not immediately released as authorities worked to notify all of his family members, said Lt. Lane Lagaret of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
The stricken inmate was found in his cell at 9:49 p.m. last Friday, according to Santa Ana police, who said jail guards worked to revive him until Orange County Fire Authority paramedics arrived. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Thursday night, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
It appears the death was medically related, Bertagna said. Surveillance video footage from the jail does not show any suspicious circumstances, police said.
