One suspect was in custody but another escaped following a failed smash-and-grab robbery Monday afternoon at a jewelry store in Mission Viejo.

Two hammer-wielding bandits smashed glass display cases at the Fredric H. Rubel store in the Shops at Mission Viejo mall around 4 p.m., according to Carrie Braun of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The would-be robbers were interrupted in some way, prompting them to flee before they apparently could grab any loot, Braun said.

One suspect was quickly caught, but the other appeared to have slipped through the deputies’ perimeter, Braun said, adding that a search of the mall did not turn up the suspect.

No one was injured, Braun said.
