Police Tuesday identified a burglary suspect who died in a struggle with Santa Ana police.
Investigators are awaiting autopsy results on the cause of death of Terrall Magee, a 53-year-old transient, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
Officers received notification at 9:17 p.m. Sunday of an audible burglar alarm at an engineering business, Bertagna said. While officers were en route, the owner of K-V Engineering at 2411 W. First St., notified police that he could see a suspect inside the business, “so it got elevated to a burglary in progress” and additional units were sent, he said.
The first officer on the scene saw a suspect hopping over a fence on the property and onto a sidewalk on First Street, Bertagna said.
A foot chase led to a liquor store, where the officer caught up to Magee, who resisted being taken into custody, Bertagna said. A patron in the liquor store tried to help the officer, the corporal said.
When a second officer arrived, the police used some sort of force to subdue the suspect, Bertagna said. As they got him handcuffed, they noticed his breathing was labored, “so they loosen him up and start giving him first aid,” Bertagna said.
Magee was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Bertagna said.
