Effective Monday, U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney becomes the new chief judge of the Central District of California, which includes federal courts in Los Angeles, Santa Ana and Riverside.
Carney succeeds U.S. District Judge Virginia A. Phillips. After a nearly four-year tenure as chief judge, she will resume service as an active judge in the court’s Western Division in Los Angeles.
Both judges are based in downtown Los Angeles.
The courts are closed to the public until June 22 at the earliest due to the coronavirus pandemic.
